Wow! Great site! There's not much love over here in the states for these older cruisers. I'm glad I found you!

It's a 1990 100 Front trak.

The clear coat was scratched horribly, but there's absolutely NO RUST on this 18 year old! So I sanded her down and painted it my favorite color, Satin Black.

I'm going with an old skool theme, since it reminds me of the Lead Sleds I used to beat around in years ago. Big, Heavy, and full of Style!

Just working on giving it some attitude. As I mentioned, I got it sprayed Satin Black, and I'll be working on lowering it quite a bit. There's not a lot of aftermarket support out there for it, so I'm enjoying the challenge!

I'm looking forward to seeing what a true enthusiast site will offer here!

I see that I'm not the only one interested in how the interior looks in your car , so please take some photos I expect it to be with non-sport velour seats - am I right? and what is the condition of your ceiling? As far as I know , in America they are tend to hang down
And It's very nice that there still are Audi typ44 enthusiasts in USA!
By the way , you know , I have a little dream , of coming to USA someday , buying there a nice typ44 (200 20v preferred) and driving it on Route 66 , listening to country and american style music and just enjoying the smooth ride Oh yes , that already feels gooood

P.S. you have a rubber(or it's plastic maybe) stripe missing in the front , under the headlights

There aren't many type 44's around here either. This is my second one. The first one I had only lasted a month before the transmission failed.

Non-sport Velour is correct sir! It's the tan one besides...and it's very dirty! It's the main reason I have few pictures of it the at the moment. (I would KILL for a black one)

I'm trying to figure out how to get the headliner out, since I had to remove the cloth entirely since it was hanging down into the seats! It's the B-Pillar cover - with the seat belt mount that is giving me trouble. I don't want to break it when I remove it! I also want to remove the headrests as well.

Here's the pattern of the fabric I'm installing. I'm also thinking of covering the door cards and seats as well.


Yes, the plastic strip is missing! I haven't tried to find a replacement yet.


I, myself would love to drive Rt66! It's a long way from here on the East coast! I'd want to play some rockabilly though.

The headliner...

B-pillars can easily be removed, if you lift off door molding/weather strip around the B-pillar.
The trim/safetybelt cover is held in place by the U-shaped part of the rubber sealing around the doorframe.

I´m talking about the sealing next to the 3 arrows (but not the one, where the arrows are pointing at).



Start lifting it carefully in the upper corners next to B-pillar and then go down to the rocker panel.

Then lift up the rocker panel cover that covers the rubber molding at the floor - be very careful and use a flat-blade screwdriver as there are some sharp metal clamps and the panel cover is likely to brake (especially at low temperatures).

Next, you´ll have to unbolt the lower safetybelt mounting (17mm hex bolt).
The rest should be self explaining.

Travertin colour is the best for me , I've always wanted to have a typ44 with the interior of this colour and wood of course
To be honest - I would NEVER cover the interior with that "tiger" stuff - I almost get puked when I saw it...
And I was quite right about the roof too , just didn't think that the problem is so big... Fortunately , my roof is in near to perfect condition

I used to wonder why most Americans want automatics and cars theat soften the ride instead of handle. Then I flew to teh west coats on business. Seeing the entire country from 30,000 feet up I noticed that most of it is straight roads with nothing but 90 degree bends at intersections!
But I digress...
My last 100 had a grey interior, which was much better but as I stated earlier, I would KILL for a black leather interior! Oh, and the wood is nce, but there is so much varnish on it that it looks like it's plastic anyway!

Sorry, the leopard print will be going in, just because it causes most people to freak out!

Thanks for the advice Ollie! I'll be trying to remove the B Pillars shortly. then i can get to the fun part of putting it back together.

I'll be removing the rear muffler this weekend. Although it is a nice stainless VAG piece, it rattles horribly while running. It's internal to teh muffler, so I'm unable to repair it. I'll be replacing it with 32 inches of straight pipe. Hope it won't be too quiet!

I also may be cutting the springs. Although it handles nicely for it's size, it's too soft and sits too tall for my tastes.

two (or even three) cents from my side:

#1 The spring cutting might result in a bumpy ride. I'd go for some real sport springs. Shouldn't be to expensive, shouldn't they?

#2 Replacing the last muffler won't sound to good. The middle one damps the most, so you ought to get a replacement for the last and then empty the middle one. Trust me, it'll wake the neighbours and immediately get you hooked on 5 cylinders And yes, you'll need the last one, then.

well , I like my interior too , looks like a sport one... Oh , I forgot - it IS sport the interior which was only installed in typ44 sport afterfacelifters
Well , what about the wood... I like typ44 wood , if it looks good and has a sharp texture
And the BEST combination that could be possible for me is sport leather seats , travertin coloured whole interior and sharp textured wood - oh my god

Thanks for the site Turbaxel. Not too bad in translation, I get the general idea. There's quite a few electrical gremlins inthe instrument cluster to find and exterminate!

As far as the muffler goes, it's just a temporary for now. The rear muffler is a nice stainless OEM, but there's something loose inside that is buzzing and rattling. It drives me crazy! I'm already hooked on the 5cyl intake growl, so the exhaust needs to be freed up for sure! As far as the neighbors, I park at an indoor garage on the second floor of the converted factory I live in. The people on the third floor should be in for a rude awakening if I cut both off. I have to be careful! (my last car was a A1 VW Cabriolet with a 1.8L, bored over .030", decked .030", and a 303 cam, (see a pattern here? )header and 2.5" system. The only muffler was a Cherry Bomb. Basically a resonator with a small amount of fiberglass packing to kill the buzziness. Car alarms were set off as I drove by daily! hahaha Plenty of performance there, but I grew tired of "bombing" everywhere I went!)

I know of the sport suspensions out there, but none are "low enough" to suit my tastes for this car.
The direction if this car is more "Street Machine" than "Sport". Focus is on style and impact (and maybe pissing off a few purists ) over performance. I'm willing to accept a stiff, bumpy ride over the floaty cruise I'm getting now. In stock form it's just so.... TALL
I usually go for a more engineered solution to this kind of problem, but there just doesn't seem to be the product that I need out there. Is there anyone offering drop-spindles or possibly coilovers?

And nothing would beat black leather. Nothing.

It would interest me how the prices for type44 in america are..

One in excellent condition has an estimated sale price of $2500 usd. That's if you can find someone that wants one.
I still have the window sticker from mine and it sold for $29,000!
I know I wouldn't have spent that kind of money for one. I didn't have it! (and still don't)

On average you can buy a decent type 44 for around $1000 to $2000 usd.

some shops just press your common springs. You might get a lot lower that way, while avoiding the bumpy ride. Try that if Ebay fails on you
