Why is the steering wheel a little to the right in typ44?

Beitrag von Ignas.quattro »

Hello!
Since you are all typ44 fans , I have a little question for you.

Which one of the engineers was smart enough to put the steering wheel a little to the right in Audi 100 typ44?
I was always aware of this , but when I had my old seats , I didn't feel it that much , cause the sides were very badly worn out , but now since I put S4 seats with perfectly normal sides , it's getting a little annoying to drive somehow twisted.
So can anyone tell me , why the steering wheel in typ44 cars is a little to the right?
This of course won't change the position of it , just out of curiosity , to know why such a stupid decision was made

For a record - I truly believe , that the engineers were aware of what they were doing

Hi Ignas

I'm not really sure , but I can remember that I've read or heard that it was made to get more comfortably in and out of the car.
Have you noticed that the left side of the steering wheel is put a little bit to the front ?.

Greetings,
Florian

wow , that is interesting and never heard , but still...
Yes , I did notice that not only the steering wheel is positioned a little to the right of the driver , it is also angled from that position to the center of the drivers seat , as I understand , which makes it even less smarter , because then the distance in both arms holding the steering wheel is different :D

I don't like it, too. But you will find it in several V.A.G.-products of the "eighties". :?
In my Passat 32B-299 it's the same desaster...

Okay, seeing or feeling it is more harder than to drive whit it, isn't it ?.

Yes ,you are right. I could say that it's only a matter of "getting used to it" :-)

i always presumed the steering wheel was offset to give the best driving position, and i actually like the way it is slightly offset as i feel it gives a beeter driving position but that might just be me :D

Hi folks,

the reason for the offset is quite simple and burried deep in the body structure of the 44 chassis.

As the 44 uses almost the identical floorplate and firewall dimensions/layout of the Typ 43, it also uses the same steering rack (in case of it´s dimensions and body mountings)
However, the Type 44 seats have been moved outwards, compared to the Type 43 and this causes the offset and the light off-parallel angle of the steering column to the vehicle´s longditudinal axis.

On the C4, they´ve changed this, by adding a cardan joint at the bottom of the steering column, so that it will match with the longditudinal axis.

Cheers,
Olli

Olli W. , thank you for this information , now everything is clear for me :)
Only one thing left - if they changed this in C4 , why they couldn't do this in typ44 at first somehow?
So as I understand , the same thing happens to typ44 vorfacelifters?
